Local advertising can technically be offline and online, or separated. They usually tie together quite well. While you are focusing on trying to gain new clients within your local market, be it a major metro area or a mid-size city or a smaller city– there are very effective strategies that you can use in order to increase your brand awareness and also your revenue.
Some of them are quite simple and obvious – the others you may not have considered doing before. The most important thing though is being seen by your community as a business that helps that community – that goes a long distance and a lot more than most think.
We feel it is important to point out that even if you are in a major market, you still are based in a smaller subsection of that area which you should consider your local market. You may not live directly in that area, but the locals know your business is there and since you are part of the neighborhood you can sponsor local events, advertise very locally and take advantage of the area that you are in. It create goodwill with your neighbors and profits for you. Below are a few examples of things you can do.
Surprisingly enough, local newspapers can be very effective advertising because the locals do actually read it. And you will be shocked how cheap it usually is. Depending on your business we have some very specific, easy to implement and very effective marketing methods that almost always work in the local publications. It is so cost effective that it should be a no brainer for your practice to jump into right away.
Sponsoring a local little league or soccer team can be a very effective way to just get your brand out there. We have pushed a few clients into trying this out and it was effective both from a public relations standpoint but also financially.
These local kids sports team are responsible for funding the program and a few hundred dollars goes a long way – most of the people there are volunteers and they are all local.
For a few hundred dollars you can get a large banner in outfield advertising your business, for 4 straight months. You are spending about 40 cents a day – just the brand identity alone would be worth that. The goodwill you create with the community is invaluable and very likely you will get new clients from it.
Another effective tool is to get a booth at the local farmers market just to advertise your business much like a meet and greet. I have had clients do this before and the cost is minimal.
The negative is it can be time consuming but depending on the day it may be worth trying. One client would hand out branded ice cold water for free and it was during the summer so it was a hit and did generate new clients for them.
This one is a bit more hands on but for the right market and area – depending on the specific service you are selling it can be a very effective way to meet new potential clients at a very low cost.
Nextdoor falls into online marketing, but it is specifically for your local market so we decided to place it here. Simply put, Nextdoor is an effective way to get new business in your door. You are allowed to target specific zip codes so you can choose who does, and who does not see your advertisements. If you are not familiar with Nextdoor, that is surprising.
It is an app that is focused on your specific community, where members post about anything from unusual happenings in the neighborhood, to favorite restaurants and so on. It is something that is used frequently by over 27 million users (which I am sure is much higher now) and they allow you to advertise your local business on there, for cheap.
I am sure over time the prices will start going up higher and higher – but as of now, the prices are very reasonable and like most things online, it is very easy to track results and your revenues based off the advertisements. We can include Nextdoor as part of your marketing plan while it is still cost effective and something that very few are taking advantage of.
